The Provincial Research and Advisory Centre for Agriculture and Horticulture, situated in the province West-Flanders. This institute was founded in 1956 and it supports all branches of agriculture and horticulture that have importance in the province. Horticulture, especially the culture of vegetables in open air, is a very important field of activity for the institute. In past decade, specific measures had to be taken in the region to protect the sources of high quality water (deep ground water). Alternative water resources are needed, treatment of this water is often necessary before use in primary production. To find solutions for these problems, in 2006 the Knowledge Centre for Water in Agriculture and Horticulture was founded. The Provincial Research and Advisory Centre has also a chemical and microbiological laboratory with extensive experience in analyses of alternative sources of water.
